The Philippine-American War resulted in three years of fighting with over 4,200 dead American soldiers and over 20,000 dead Philippians. As many as 200,000 Filipino citizens dies of disease, violence, and/or famine. Emilio Aguinaldo surrendered control of the Philippines to the United States.

japan invades 1941-1945
During World War II, the Japanese invaded the Philippines causing the Japanese-American war and finally ending up with the Japanese having occupation in the Philippines until their independence.
u.s. RECOGNIZES philippine independence 1946
On July 4, 1946, representatives of the United States of America and of the Republic of the Philippines signed a Treaty of General Relations between the two governments. The treaty provided for the recognition of the independence of the Republic of the Philippines as of July 4, 1946, and the relinquishment of American sovereignty over the Philippine Islands.
Emilio Aguinaldo
Aguinaldo is recognized as the first official president of the Philippines and led the Filipino forces against the Spanish in the Spanish-American War and again against the United States in the Philippine-American War; however, he was captured by American forces in 1902, ending his presidency.
Gaining independence
The Philippines gained independence from the Spanish in 1898. They gained independence again in 1946 from the United States of America.
