Resisting Imperialism
The Filipinos fought the Spanish for their independence after years of the Spanish occupying the Philippines causing the Spanish-Filipino war lasting from 1896-1898 and won with help from the United States. However, the United States believing some other country would take the Philippines fought the Filipinos in the Philippine-American war lasting from 1899-1902 which the Filipinos lost and where under the United States rule until 1946 when they gained independence.
Effects of Imperialism on Culture, Language, RELIGION and traditions
- Culture: Much of the music, dance and literature are influenced by the Spanish.
- Language: The Philippines have many native languages (Cebuano, Tagalog, Ilocano, Ilonggo, and Chavacano) which do to Spanish rule borrow a variety of Spanish words. The official language was Spanish but is currently English and Filipino with Filipino being a modernized version of Tagalog.
- Religion: The Philippines were originally a form of Animism but the current majority is Christian (90%) do to Spanish rule.
- Traditions: Celebrate Day of the Dead which originally came from Mexico and Christmas as well.
Persecution of population
Conflicts arose with the Muslim Filipinos population and highland Luzon tribal populations eventually leading to autonomous regions for these select populations.

The Philippines not being connected to the continent makes the borders the main island and all the smaller surrounding islands.
Effects of imperialism in present day
Due to American imperialism English is a main language in the Philippines and until recently there was still American bases in the Philippines.
